Several years back I was waiting in the office of my skin doctor having a routine visit after he had found (and removed) a skin cancer from my face. This was one of several 5-year bi-monthly visits where checks and tests would be run to ensure that there wasn't any reappearance of the melanoma.
I remember he walked in and saw a bit of worry on my face as I was waiting for the results. He told me instantly that the results were positive (like always). He advised, as he always did, to make and effort to prevent from getting burnt by the sun, which will help make getting melanoma less likely. He additionally repeated that although melanoma is the most fatal cancer, it is also the most curable, when caught soon enough, so be sure to not miss any visits.
Always being conscious that food plays a role in health, and being aware that this particular doctor was "health conscious" as he was a vegan and came to work on a bike most days, on this particular appointment I decided to ask about food. Even though I basically ate "whatever" at the time, I questioned "isn't what we consume a large factor in our health and our capability of fighting disease?". His reply was along the lines of "you don't eat processed foods and you consume plenty of greens, so what else could you do".
I think that was his way of suggesting a whole foods diet. As I dove right in educating myself about nutrition, whole foods, the different diets, it eventually brought me to the idea of vegetarianism, as well as veganism. I assumed that those diet programs equated to health but that's not always the case, so I moved on with my research to discover the way to be the most healthy.
When I learned about raw food, I felt that was it. I figured eating a raw, organic, vegan diet was the best way to eat. I'm not as convinced now that the "regular" raw food diet is "it" after studying a little more. I listened to loads of interviews with Daniel Vitalis in regards to "wild foods", and it really made a lot of sense. He discusses how wild foods are "more powerful" and that they might tap their root through several layers of concrete just to survive. Also, they often have medicinal qualities that can help to "tonify" our organs.
He has suggested that a lot of what we consume, or a lot of what raw food eaters as well as vegans consume is what he calls domesticated foods, foods that were modified over the decades to become new versions of old foods. I believe he said that the domesticated banana, being so different from its' wild counterpart, is likened to the distinction between a chihuahua and a wolf.
So, how do we go about "going wild"? It's not always simple for people to visit the forest, pluck wild health food and make tinctures, salads, teas, etc, but there is something that can be done. "Bitters" are found in food stores, and these might be the nearest to "wild" foods that are available "domestically".
Some of the usual "wild-ish" green veggies that I personally include in my food regime are: arugula, dandelion, carrot tops, collard greens, watercress and sometimes endive. Kale and spinach may qualify as bitters nevertheless we're already including them into our meals aren't we? :)
