I have bought various multi tools in the past, however as yet not really had a use for them. I carried one for fixing saddles and horse gear when on the move for a while but wasn't too pleased with them.
For the most part they are a collection of unsubstantial miniature tools with far too many ornaments and toys built in to be of use for anything except the most simple of tasks.
When the better quality tools were launched they were substantial and chunky again, still with too many unusable tools attached. For a short period it was evident that the multi tool manufacturer's tried to make the biggest clunkiest, bulkiest pocket tool for sale. It was like the cell phone challenge with most brands trying to pack the most stuff they could into a multi tool. It got pretty weird for a period of time.
For hiking trips I just took with me a tiny tool kit with what I figured I would use instead of a chunky tool. It tipped the scales at a very slightly more than a pound but inevitably it would be used at least one time on a longer trip. The kit usually consisted of a tiny stubby screwdriver, a pair of pliers, some replacement screws, plus some wire. I recently discovered a multi tool that makes absolute sense to carry with me though.
Funnily enough, they have been for sale for a while but I ignored them. Some time ago, I had to install a shower head but was not equipped with tools. In the end I did it with only a can opener and a set of scissors. I thought this would be a good starting point for making use of my multi tool again. I went through the junk drawer and it showed up after a while, I then reminded myself why it ended up there initially. Because it was junk.

At around 5 ounces it could live in my pocket unnoticed most of the time and it mean that I no longer needed a couple of items from my tool kit. The brilliant point is that for the world of camping where you may have to repair a gas cooker, a metal buckle on a pack, the zipper on a shelter, or tighten up a damaged canoe seat; the Skeletool is everything you need without any of the unnecessary tools.
First off the pliers are pretty similar for multi tools. They have incorporated wire cutters and they cut through coat hangers pretty well so will take care of the brass wire I carry.
Next the knife, easy deploy with one hand using a thumb hole. The blade was sharp enough to cut the corner off a piece of paper with no problems.
The screwdriver attachment comes with a pair of phillips and a pair of slotted bits. The bits are Leatherman proprietary as opposed to industry standard, however they do lock into the unit with a spring clip. The extra one neatly stores in the handle and is a friction fit.
Finally, its well constructed and put together by my standards - I am pretty fussy with stuff like this. I purchased my Leatherman Skeletool at Leatherman Store and they also sell the Leatherman Skeletool CX.
