New Jersey law enforcement use every variety of radar and laser speed measurement equipment in existence, which makes it rather difficult to recommend a radar detector for use in the state. I live in New Jersey and I have personally observed laser, X-band, K-band, and Ka-band units patrolling local roads and highways. To select a radar detector in New Jersey, you'll need to have one which protects well against all radar bands. This also means that you'll need to have a detector that does a great job of filtering out false alerts.
The first big thing about NJ police to notice is that they still use X-band. The majority of states have retired their X-band equipment and if you live in one of those states, you are usually able to deactivate X-band on your radar detector to cut down on false alerts. However you cannot do this in New Jersey, which is the main reason why you need a radar detector that handles false alerts well.
Only two radar detectors have excellent false alert suppression and great overall performance on all radar bands. These are the Beltronics GX65 and the Escort Passport 9500ix. These two units have the capability to lock out false alerts by radar frequency and location with the help of the on board GPS functionality. The GX65 will allow you to manually lock out false alerts. The Escort Passport 9500ix actually takes it a step further and will automatically lock out false alarms that it experiences three times with no manual intervention. A detector without this lockout capability will alert like crazy on streets with a lot of commercial stores such as route 17 and route 4, which will probably drive you insane if you frequent highways like these.
The final threat in NJ is the utilization of LIDAR (laser) guns. Even though laser guns can be detected by conventional radar detectors, an alert usually means that the police officer already has your speed. For laser, we often suggest a laser jammer such as the Laser Interceptor or the Blinder M27. If you are in New Jersey and need to be completely protected, you are going to need to have a laser jammer, especially when you travel in northern New Jersey on either the Garden State Parkway or the New Jersey Turnpike.
If we had to select between the two radar detectors mentioned previously, we would choose the Escort Passport 9500ix just because it has the automatic false alert suppression versus the GX65's manual lockout. The more desirable of the two laser jammers described is the Laser Interceptor, which we would recommend purchasing as a supplement to the Passport.
