Status of David

If you love art then you must visit the Uffizi and the Academia, two of the finest museums in the worlds. The Uffizi gallery, near the River Arno, houses many famous paintings and sculptures of the Renaissance such as the exquisite 'Primavera' and 'Birth of Venus' by Sandro Botticelli. There is always a long queue for this gallery, so wear comfortable shoes, and carry a drink with you on hot days.

The Accademia Gallery at Via Ricasoli is famous for housing the original statue of David, by Michelangelo. It also has a fine display of Renaissance art. Michelangelo's famous statue was moved to the museum in 1873. Viewing the statute of David should be the first thing to do on your romantic getaway vacation to Florence. Even if you are not into art, the magnificent marble Status of David by Michelangelo Buonarotti is a must-see when you visit Florence. The imposing marble sculpture of David was commissioned by the council of Florence in 1501. You need to see the 5-m tall statue to understand why it is considered a masterpiece. The magnificence of this statue is mind-blowing, and beautiful! No picture can do this statue justice, you must see it in person. Take a close look at the details of the veins in his arms and neck, superb muscle definition and other features, you will be absolutely amazed. Many of the visitors just sat down and gaze at the statue, as it is so captivating.

Make sure you visit the Accademia dell'Arte museum to see the real Statue of David. The statue in the Piazza della Signoria, outside the Palazzo Vecchio, is a smaller copy. There is also a bronze copy at Piazzale Michelangelo. The craftsmanship, the skill, the genius that went into creating the David cannot be described with mere words or even photographs, it must be held with the eyes. The copy of the statue that sits in front of the Palazzo Vecchio lacks all the majesty that makes the original statue truly spectacular.

In the hallway before the exhibit, there are 12 unfinished marble statues carved by Michelangelo. Seeing these 12 unfinished statues, you will appreciate the complexity of Michelangelo's masterpiece.
